Mel Russell will once again showcase her research on America’s entrance into World War I 100 years ago and how it affected Yolo County on Thursday, May 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Woodland Public Library, 300 First St. This program, which is free, will showcase the response and aid to the war from the Woodland community. A nice article showcasing retired Yolo County Archives coordinator Mel Russell's work on World War I. She will be speaking in Davis on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. Titled “Now We Are At War,” it addresses the impact on Yolo communities of America’s declaration of war in April 1917. Three more lectures are to follow throughout the county.

Facebook: Students Study History and Cursive Writing

Yolo County archives specialist, Heather Lanctot, recently visited Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Davis. She taught the students about the important of local archives and government, including a lesson on how to transcribe Board of Supervisors meeting notes from the 1850s. The students worked hard at reading "very old" cursive writing and learned interesting facts about our county.

In 1961 Pilar & Andrew Andrade started a tamale parlor, El Sombrero, in Woodland. They later developed a tortilla factory & Mexican grocery store at 3rd & Lincoln. This color photo was taken in 1993.

Facebook: Knights Landing Flood - 1909

On January 26, 1909 the Woodland Daily Democrat reported on the worsening flood conditions in Knights Landing. The report explained that “the river registered 1...8 feet and 7 inches at 10 o’clock [that] morning.” Some of the homes that were affected by the flood included “the Lilly residence on the Sutter side . . . [which was] undermined and [was] likely to be swept away” as well as the Morris and Crane residences which with “another foot [of water, the river would be brought] into both houses.”

Facebook: 30th Anniversary Lecture in Woodland

Local historian David Wilkinson begins his lecture with a story about how Woodland's original name was Yolo City. David's topic was "Woodland's Architectural History."

David and his wife, Diane Adams, have rehabilitated their Victorian house in Woodland, and David has served on local and statewide preservation organizations. He has written two books on Woodland's history, co-authored and edited a third book, and is working on a fourth.
